Nightime Residental Burglaries, Greenville Avenue Area.

Residential Burglary Awareness

It’s Spring, and everyone is spending more time outside. While people are out enjoying the nice weather, their homes are vacant. Burglars are aware of this, and, during the warmer weather, residential burglaries usually increase.

Nighttime residential burglaries have increased in beat 142 (beat 142 is bounded by Mockingbird, Abrams, Belmont & Greenville). A reminder to make sure doors are locked at all times, and that garage doors closed and locked. Outdoor lighting during evening and nighttime hours helps to deter burglars. Many times burglars access a home from the rear, and the neighborhoods in this area have alleys, so make sure there’s an outdoor light in the rear of the home, too.

Get to know your neighbors and look out for each other. Many of the arrests for residential burglaries are made because a neighbor observed the offense, called 911, and gave detailed information that led police to the suspect. Citizen involvement is critical, and has been a huge part of the decline in crime over the past several years.

For crime prevention tips, visit the Central Patrol web site (http://www.cepatrolcrimewatch.org). From the main page, look under INFO, CRIME PREVENTION FLYERS.

If you want more information, contact the Neighborhood Policing Officer (NPO) desk for Central Patrol at 214-670-4420. If no one answers, all officers are in the field, so please leave a message. Also, on the Central Patrol web site, look under CONTACT US for COMMUNITY & NPO for names of NPO officers. Click on a name, and you’ll be taken to an e-mail page to reach that person. For the Greenville avenue area, look for sector 140 NPO officers.

City Lighting Survey Completed

In January, the city was working on a survey of residential street lighting due to the neighborhood’s high number of car break-ins. Every block in the neighborhood was assessed to determine if additional lighting was required, was warranted or was even possible. The results are in.   Of 104 blocks surveyed, 50 were rated as needing additional lighting. Twenty-one did not qualify. (Either a light was already in place or was simply not needed.) Another 33 blocks were rated as “not recommended” mainly due to tree canopies which would block out any lighting.

There is a process in place to add street lighting for the 50 blocks where the request is justified. If your block is one of the 50 that needs additional lighting and you would like more information on the process for adding lighting, contact us via the crime watch coordinator at CrimeWatch@LGNA.net.

Burglar Arrested Thru ENP

The Lower Greenville Crime Watch announces the first arrest to be conducted as part of our Extended Neighborhood Patrol. The arrest was of a career criminal who most recently burglarized a home in the 5800 block of Kenwood. There is no way to know how many burglaries we prevented with this arrest, but we are confident it was no small number based on the length of the burglar’s rap sheet. His rap sheet included numerous burglary incidents going back 7 years. Continue reading “Burglar Arrested Thru ENP”

Watch Your Wheels

1/18/08 The Lower Greenville Neighborhood Association Crime Watch reports a recent crime spree in the area. In the last week or so, there have been 6 incidents of people having wheels stolen from their vehicles.

They appear to be targeting SUVs with 22″ custom wheels. However, regular cars have been hit as well.

Most have been from cars parked in the street but a couple were parked in the driveway. DPD recommends using your garage if you have one, but most importantly, try not to park on the street.
