LGNA Summer Pot Luck and Fajita Fest 2009!

LGNA’s annual July summer social was a rousing success in 2008. This year’s event looks like it’s going to be even better. Our good neighbor, Blue Goose Cantina (located at Greenville and Goodwin) will generously provide fajita fixings – tortillas, meat, toppings, beans, chips, and salsa.
To show off your culinary expertise, bring a side dish or dessert.  Whether it’s a salad, corn casserole, or Kroger’s apple pie – bring a dish to share with your neighbors. Last year’s contributions filled several tables, and folks went back for second and third helpings.
A smash hit from last year’s social was the “salsa contest,” with overwhelming requests to repeat the contest this year. If you have a favorite salsa recipe or dip, bring an entry for the contest in addition to your side dish. Everyone will sample the entries, and winners will be determined by their votes. Last year’s salsa contest featured heavy competition from over a dozen stellar entries, with District 14’s Plan Commissioner Neil Emmons taking home the top honors.

Neighborhood Picnic April 4, 2009

LGNA is replacing its regular March meeting with a neighborhood picnic. Not an ordinary picnic, this will be a school supply drive benefiting both RE Lee and Stonewall Elementary.

We have a complete wish list below, but colored pencils, glue sticks, crayolas, post-it notes and tape are among the supplies needed. Our neighborhood schools are great, but they can always use our help.

For those who don’t have time to go shopping, we’ll have burgers, hot dogs and soft drinks available for a nominal charge. Proceeds from concessions will be used to purchase school supplies. Bring a blanket or some lawn chairs and enjoy a few hours with your neighbors. We encourage you to bring cookies, chips or other snacks to share. This will be a good opportunity to meet your neighbors, support our neighborhood schools and have some fun. Bring the kids!

The picnic will be held at the playground at RE Lee Elementary on April 4 from 11am to 1pm. The playground is located on the south side of the school along Goodwin. Please, no alcohol on school grounds!

City Lighting Survey Completed

In January, the city was working on a survey of residential street lighting due to the neighborhood’s high number of car break-ins. Every block in the neighborhood was assessed to determine if additional lighting was required, was warranted or was even possible. The results are in.   Of 104 blocks surveyed, 50 were rated as needing additional lighting. Twenty-one did not qualify. (Either a light was already in place or was simply not needed.) Another 33 blocks were rated as “not recommended” mainly due to tree canopies which would block out any lighting.

Click to download the City Lighting Survey Results

There is a process in place to add street lighting for the 50 blocks where the request is justified. If your block is one of the 50 that needs additional lighting and you would like more information on the process for adding lighting, contact us via the crime watch coordinator at CrimeWatch@LGNA.net.

Marathon Kudos!

A list of all the White Rock Marathon participants from our neighborhood is not possible, but here are kudos to two LGNA volunteers who ran the full marathon.  Newsletter Coordinator Diane Evans ran an excellent time of 4:36:49 and finished #2113 overall.  Board member Alan Schonborn ran 3:35:03 and placed an astounding #347 overall.  Good work!
