Crime Alert: Driveway Robbery

There was a robbery in the 6000 block of Morningside late in the night on Thursday (Halloween). The suspect held the resident at gunpoint in her driveway and made off with her purse and cell phone. The suspect is described as a black male about 5’10” last seen wearing a cap and a cloth over his face with a dark shirt and dark pants. The incident occurred at about 2:40am as the victim was returning home. Although the neighborhood was full of trick-or-treaters earlier in the evening, this was very late at night after he festivities had ended.

Although this is very unusual in our neighborhood, it isn’t the first such incident. Most robberies in our area occur closer to the commercial businesses on Greenville. Some time ago, we had a similar driveway robbery in the residential part of the neighborhood and it was followed by a few more. In those incidents it was not limited to a solitary female victim, there was even one incident involving a couple during the daytime.

So the lesson here is to be very aware of your surroundings at all times, not just late at night. If you see someone you don’t know near your home, take a drive around the block or pull over and wait to see where they go. If they don’t continue on their way pretty quickly, call 911. Because we live in an area with a lot of commercial businesses, we have a lot more activity in the late hours and sometimes we become immune to it. But please remember to keep a wary eye on your surroundings.

And one final word, if you find yourself in a situation like this, DO NOT RESIST. In one of the previous incidents like this, the victim resisted resulting in several shots fired and the victim getting powder burns from the shots. There is nothing in your possession worth that risk.
